Taking your Mombasa business online - the 5-step plan that actually works
October 12, 2026 / 2 min read
Every week another business owner asks me to 'take them online'. The phrase scares people because it sounds like a mountain. It is not a mountain. It is five moves, done in order, each one compounding the last.
Step 1 - Say one thing clearly
What do you sell, to whom, and why you? One sentence. 'We fit kitchens in Nyali.' 'Same-day office cleaning in Mombasa Island.' If your sentence takes a paragraph, that is the first thing to fix - everything online is downstream of this.
Step 2 - Get found on Google (this part is free)
The single biggest win for local businesses is a Google Business Profile: your map pin, hours, photos and reviews. Fill it completely, post to it, and ask every happy customer for a review - reviews are the local economy's currency. Then make sure your website confirms what Google shows: same name, same phone, same promise.
Step 3 - Make WhatsApp the front door
In Kenya, customers do not fill forms; they message. Your website should open that conversation: a button that starts a WhatsApp chat, your number visible everywhere, and good answers ready for the three questions you always get asked. Every step you remove between 'interested' and 'messaged' is money back in your pocket.
Step 4 - Take payments and bookings without the chaos
Once messages start moving, the next bottleneck is the back-and-forth: 'When are you free?' 'Can I pay on arrival?' A simple booking flow - pick a slot, pay a small deposit, get a reminder - removes hours of texting and cuts no-shows. You do not need a big system. You need one flow that works and never sleeps.
Step 5 - Keep it alive
A site is not a poster; it is a garden. Fresh photos, real reviews, answered messages, a note when prices change. Ten minutes a week beats a big rebuild once a year.
The order matters. Most businesses jump straight to step 4 - shiny system, no story, no visibility - and wonder why it is quiet. Do the boring steps first; they carry the loud ones.
Not sure which step you are on? Message me and I will tell you honestly.
Have a project like this in mind?
Start with a short message. The first conversation is free, and you will leave it knowing the right next step - whether or not we build together.
